Landi Renzo USA Announces the Development of Dual Fuel CNG System for Detroit Diesel 12.7L S60 Engine

Glider Decal Demo CNG DF logo

Landi Renzo USA, a leading provider of automotive natural gas systems, announces the development of a dual fuel (diesel and natural gas) system for heavy duty trucks.

Technology

The dual fuel system for factory remanufactured Detroit Diesel S60 12.7L engines – developed through Landi Renzo’s in-house engineering and technical team – will allow operators of over the road trucks to take full advantage of the environmental and economic benefits of natural gas as a transportation fuel.

With a growing network of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) stations throughout the U.S., this proprietary system will allow operators to displace the majority of their diesel fuel usage with natural gas, resulting in:

  • Average fuel displacement up to 60%
  • Noise reduction up to 40%
  • Particulate matter reduction up to 40%
  • CO2 reduction up to 14%
  • Smoke reduction up to 50%

“As a world leader in alternative fuel systems, we are pleased to announce the development of this innovative technology. Not only does this expand our current clean fuel product offering, but also it further promotes the increased use of natural gas as a fuel and moves us further down a path of energy independence in the United States” says Andrea Landi, Landi Renzo USA President.

Benefits

  • Performance comparable to the original engine in terms of torque, horsepower, and drivability
  • Maintains and improves the emission levels of the original engine
  • Flexibility for adaptation to different diesel engines
  • Ability to switch back to 100% diesel if needed
  • Requires less CNG storage compared to a dedicated CNG vehicles
  • Extended range compared to original diesel system

Nationwide, natural gas is available at over 1,200 stations and priced up to $2.00/gallon LESS than diesel fuel. In the event natural gas is not readily available, the engine automatically reverts back to 100% diesel operation.

While this specific dual fuel CNG system is new to the U.S. market, Landi Renzo has successfully deployed this technology globally on applications that include Fiat, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Ford, Hyundai and Renault diesel engines.

Landi Renzo is in the process of applying for approval from EPA. The products are expected to be available to the U.S. market by the end of 2013.

Landi Renzo and Baker Electromotive invite you to come see the Baker Electromotive DNG 100,  a new Freightliner Glider truck, equipped  with a factory OEM remanufactured Detroit Diesel S60 12.7L engine and the Landi Renzo Dual Fuel system at:

New York Joins Other States in Support of EPA Aftermarket CNG Systems

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has formally indicated that it will allow the use of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified systems on any motor vehicles labeled as a 50-state vehicle. For vehicles labeled and certified as California-only, New York will continue to require the use of California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved aftermarket systems. Since the vast majority of vehicles are now certified and labeled as 50-state vehicles, the state’s action means that fleets and consumers will now have access to a much larger selection of natural gas aftermarket options. A 50-state vehicle is legal in all U.S. states because it has been certified to California and EPA emission standards. Vehicles that are certified as California-only are legal in California and CARB states (i.e. states that have adopted California’s motor vehicle emission regulations for new vehicles).

The policy guidance was issued in a letter to the Clean Communities of Central New York, a member of DOE’s Clean Cities Program. Patrick Bolton of NYSERDA spear-headed the discussions with DEC, which included six New York Clean Cities coalitions. Barry Carr, Director of Business Development for Landi Renzo USA, and a volunteer coordinator for Clean Communities of Central New York also was instrumental in this effort. The hope is that other Northeast CARB states will adopt the same position in the near future. New York joins two other CARB states, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, in indicating that it will allow the use of EPA certified systems. The decision is particularly important because currently there are no bi-fuel CARB certified aftermarket systems for natural gas. The only bi-fuel systems that have been certified to CARB’s rules are OEM applications.

If that wasn’t enough, a F-250 bi-fuel pick up was available to test drive at the Green Truck ride & drive. Read more about the event at ShowTimes Daily or Fleets & Fuels.

Bi-Fuel Compressed Natural Gas System Coming to Ford F-450 and F-550

ford-f-450-chassis-cab-front-view

Landi Renzo USA, a Ford Motor Company Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM) and subsidiary of Landi Renzo SpA, is pleased to announce the addition of their bi-fuel system for the Ford F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks with the 6.8L engine as part of the company’s lineup of natural gas vehicles available in 2013.

Landi Renzo’s compressed natural gas (CNG) systems are already available on several Ford and GM powered vehicles, which currently include dedicated CNG options for the Ford Econoline, F-450, F-550 and F-650 Super Duty trucks, in addition to their bi-fuel system already found on F-250 and F350 trucks.

The 2013 F-450 and F-550 bi-fuel trucks will be available in Q2 for ship-thru by a Landi Renzo preferred (QVM) body company – saving delivery costs by utilizing the Ford transportation system – or through a Landi Renzo authorized installation partner, capable of serving the most custom of applications.

“The widespread adoption of our dedicated CNG and bi-fuel systems, for both Ford and GM based platforms, has translated into increased industry awareness of the durability and reliability of our technology.” says Andrea Landi, President of Landi Renzo USA/Baytech. “As a result, our customers have expressed significant interest in Landi Renzo developing this particular application and we have answered their requests with the impending release of this system.”

Landi Renzo believes that flexibility is the foundation of our distribution model and understands that a single distribution channel is not always the right fit for every utility, shuttle, and delivery company or government fleet. That’s why we provide three unique channels to obtain the product right for you, including our 25,000 sq. ft. QVM installation facility located in the heart of Southern California, in addition to our ship-thru and authorized installation network.
