SoCalGas Announces Plans to Convert 200 New Field Service Trucks to Run on Renewable Natural Gas

Fleet vehicles will use Eco Ready System from Landi Renzo USA and renewable natural gas to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Apr 22, 2021

LOS ANGELES, April 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) today announced it will convert 200 new Ford F-250 service pickup trucks to run on renewable natural gas (RNG) – a renewable form of energy produced from a variety of waste streams. The service trucks will be outfitted with the newest Landi Renzo Eco Ready™ equipment, a California Air Resource Board certified ultra-low emissions vehicles system. Equipping these 200 service vehicles to run on RNG is expected to reduce over 2,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) per year which is equivalent to removing 1,800 passenger vehicles from our roads for one year. With the addition of these 200 new net-zero emissions service trucks, nearly 40 percent of SoCalGas’ service vehicles will run on clean fuels.

“This project is one of the many decarbonizing initiatives we’re implementing here at SoCalGas as we continue to move towards a net zero future,” said Sandra Hrna, vice president of supply chain and operations support at SoCalGas. “In order to achieve our sustainability goals, we work to build strong relationships with innovative partners to help us continue delivering technologies to further decarbonize the transportation sector.”

Putting more clean trucks on the road is a key part of SoCalGas’ commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in its operations and delivery of energy by 2045. SoCalGas is the largest gas distribution utility in North America to set a net zero emissions target including scopes 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions, which would eliminate not only its own direct emissions, but also those generated by customers’ energy delivered by SoCalGas’ energy infrastructure.

RNG is a renewable form of energy produced from the waste streams at dairy farms, wastewater treatment plants, landfills, and other sources. Depending on its source, RNG can be carbon negative, meaning it avoids more emissions than it emits when produced and used as a fuel. Capturing the methane from these waste sources and converting it into RNG keeps greenhouse gas emissions with high global warming potential from entering the atmosphere and reduces the use of fossil fuels.

“SoCalGas and Landi Renzo USA have been longstanding partners and we’re thrilled to collaborate and expand our partnership to produce a clean fleet of vehicles for SoCalGas and expand our partnership for the future of clean transportation,” said Andrea Landi, president of Landi Renzo USA. “We are thankful for this opportunity, it supports our local community and partners while also promoting the importance of clean transportation and technologies to help us support a sustainable future.”

Last year, SoCalGas and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) provided $600,000 towards Landi Renzo’s natural gas engine development program to modify and develop a 7.3-liter CARB and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified Heavy Duty CNG engine for commercial vehicle applications.

“By committing to their sustainability goals with real action, SoCalGas and Landi Renzo USA are providing a model for businesses to make the switch to cleaner fuels,” said South Coast AQMD’s Executive Officer Wayne Nastri. “These efforts will go a long way in helping South Coast AQMD achieve its clean air goals.”

Landi Renzo USA is partnering with two local companies on this project – Phenix Truck Body and CTEC Truck Body. The Landi Renzo Eco Ready™ CNG system is designed and engineered from the base Ford 6.2L engine in partnership between Landi Renzo USA and Ford Motor Company.  The fleet conversion is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

Landi Renzo USA’s donated F-250 CNG Truck Hard At Work Supporting Laundry Truck LA

TORRANCE, Oct. 28, 2020 — Landi Renzo USA (LRUSA) and Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) partnered with The Laundry Truck LA (TLTLA) to unveil the organization’s newest trailer which will provide free mobile laundry services to unhoused individuals in the Greater Los Angeles area. The trailer is fully equipped with five sets of washers and dryers, a folding station, and a water heater. With the addition of the new trailer, TLTLA is expecting to complete over 10,000 loads of laundry by the end of 2020. Please see photos from the media event here.

The Laundry Truck LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free mobile laundry services for those in need throughout Los Angeles and is one of the first mobile laundry services in the country to serve the homeless population. With the help of additional sponsors and partners, TLTLA has successfully expanded their operations to meet growing demands. Earlier this year, Landi Renzo USA donated a converted CNG Ford F-250 pickup truck equipped with the company’s Eco Ready™ compressed natural gas (CNG) system to assist with TLTLA’s efforts. The addition of the truck will help TLTLA expand their reach to more people in need while reducing their environmental impact and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

“We are thrilled with the opportunity to give back within our local community. SoCalGas and the Laundry Truck LA should be proud of the work they’ve done to help people in need. Because the Laundry Truck LA operates in close quarters with the homeless, having a clean-burning truck is just icing on the cake, said Andrea Landi, president of Landi Renzo USA.

TLTLA’s trailers offer services seven days a week, including night shifts, to unhoused individuals throughout Los Angeles County’s parks, recreation centers and specialized locations. These free laundry services are made available exclusively to individuals experiencing homelessness at designated locations. Accessible personal care services, like laundry, play a large part in helping improve the day-to-day livelihood, self-confidence, hygiene, and future opportunities for underserved populations.

“I look forward to having my clothes washed and folded every week. Earlier this year, SoCalGas donated $25,000 to TLTLA to support rising demands for personal care and laundry services.

“As an Angeleno myself, I am extremely proud to join forces with The Laundry Truck LA to provide much needed support and services to our unhoused neighbors throughout Los Angeles County,” said Andy Carrasco, vice president of strategy and engagement, and chief environmental officer at SoCalGas. “Our partnership with The Laundry Truck LA and Landi Renzo allows us to make a positive impact to our community and the environment.”

“People experiencing homelessness in LA have been hit hard by the pandemic, and the demand for our free mobile laundry services has never been higher,” said Jodie Dolan, founder of The Laundry Truck LA. “We are deeply grateful to SoCalGas and Landi Renzo for their incredible support and partnership. This new truck enables us to expand our reach and provide our services to those who need them most.”

The Ford base engine will offer fleets a Near Zero Natural Gas engine for the F-450, F-550, F-650, F-750, F-53, F-59, and E-450 applications. This Near Zero Natural Gas engine is packaged for shuttle buses (e.g., hotel, airport, rental car) box trucks, tow trucks, service body trucks, large package trucks and a host of other vocational offerings. Many of these vehicles will be able to take advantage of various grant funding opportunities.

“We are excited that Landi Renzo USA is driving clean technology for the automotive sector. They’ve done this on a global scale and now are bringing their advanced technology to the U.S. market,” said Michael Lee, project manager, research and development at SoCalGas.

To date, the biggest gap in the Near Zero Natural Gas offering was the work truck market. In addition to operating on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), this engine will also be able to utilize Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). RNG fuel is organic-based and is carbon net-negative when used by natural gas trucks. RNG provides a 70 percent reduction in greenhouse gases versus gasoline or diesel.

Andrea Landi, president of Landi Renzo USA, stated, “While we have deployed thousands of clean natural gas vehicles over the past 10 years, this collaboration will drive customers to the next generation of Near Zero Natural Gas vehicles. We are excited about this opportunity. Unlike some technologies that take years to develop, our Near Zero engine is available for order now.”

The Near Zero Natural Gas vehicles come directly from the Ford manufacturing plant to Landi Renzo USA’s facility in Torrance or an Authorized Distributor, where they are converted with the Landi Renzo’s Eco Ready™ CNG system.

Landi Renzo USA is the only approved Ford QVM (Qualified Vehicle Modifier) developer and installer for CARB, the agency responsible for implementing California’s landmark climate legislation. As an OEM approved system under Ford’s QVM program, the original warranty remains fully in place.
